Bangkok became national capital in 1782, when the first monarch of the currently reigning Chakri dynasty, King Yot Fa (Rama I), built his palace on the western bank of great river Chao Phraya (Thonburi), at Ratanakosin, founding the city spiritual core. Now, Bangkok is full of well preserved ancient sites. The National Museum is a must, as are the Banglamphu district, Grand Palace and Wat Po.
